Hello World

Hello everyone and welcome to Idiom’s first blog! When I first joined Idiom a few months ago I was given a mandate to help revamp the Resource Center. Our team had the goal of making it a useful tool for everyone we work with. This meant creating new Flash demos that really showcase the great features in WorldServer. It also meant updating the website look and feel, making it easier for you to find the information you need, and in the future it means a new place to exchange information similar to today’s Yahoo Groups.

In addition, I knew starting a corporate blog focused on the localization industry and current technology trends could really add value for our customers, partners, and really anyone interested in the field. We won't shy away from hard issues either. In the coming days, weeks, and months, we’ll talk about machine translation and how it impacts everyone in the globalization supply chain, “Web 2.0” technology as it relates to global websites, and even that sticky problem of adaptation.

It won’t just be me talking on here either. You’ll see posts from various Idiom employees, and, if I’m persuasive enough, a few guest bloggers as well. Finally, I invite you to participate in all of the Resource Center. We will certainly strive to keep making it better, but your input is invaluable. We're here for you, so let us know what you’d like to see.

So this wouldn’t be a very good first entry if I didn’t share some interesting tidbit of information, right? Right. Recently we had the good fortune of working with Jost Zetzche, industry expert and writer of The Translator's Tool Box. Since his book concentrates on bringing technology to translators in a friendly way, who better to create a useful demonstration on how to use our desktop workbench (Warning: this is a very big file and will take some time to load in your browser)?

He was recently in town for the AMTA Conference, and Bill Rabkin, our WorldServer evangelist, and I sat down with him for dinner. During conversation Jost mentioned his newsletter, The Toolkit. He was nice enough to send us a sample and I have to say it's top notch content. His newsletter informs transaltors about technology. How it can make their work easier, certainly not harder. I encourage everyone to check it out.

[shameless plug]Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't point out in volume 69 where TM data backup is discussed, that a server-based GMS like WorldServer solves just this sort of problem. That said, we should all be better about backing up our data.[/shameless plug]
